Eustache Ahomagnon did not come to fashion through drawing, but through imagery and the experience of the body.

The son of a king from a Beninese royal lineage, Eustache grew up surrounded by traditional ceremonies. After earning a science-focused high school diploma and a bachelor’s degree in geography “to please his parents,” his life took a turn in his sophomore year of college when he joined a modeling agency. As a model, he traveled throughout Africa and honed his visual sensibility.

Aware of the fleeting nature of modeling, he moved to the other side of the camera at the urging of his brother, a film director. He learned on the job and quickly established himself as a fashion photographer, capturing the elegance of drapery and the power of facial expressions.

But her artistic quest takes her further still; inspired by her mother, who is herself a photographer, Eustache chooses to document Voodoo, a cultural and spiritual heritage deeply rooted in Benin.

“When I go to convents to photograph ceremonies, I bring my fashion photographer’s eye to the task. It’s that unique perspective that creates this strong connection between contemporary aesthetics and tradition.”

The Missébo Spark and the Local Textile Revolution

The origins of the Vognon brand stem from a personal and practical story. In 2023, before flying off on a business trip to France, Eustache wanted to create outfits suited to his daily life as a photographer: structured jackets and comfortable, sturdy cargo pants.

Like many residents of Cotonou, he visits the large secondhand market in Missébo to hunt for unique fabrics, which he then gives to the family’s tailor to be made into custom-fit garments. His friends and family are captivated by this unique style and begin commissioning pieces from him. That’s how the idea of creating a brand began to take shape.

During a fashion show in Toulouse, Eustache presented his first collection, intending to use traditional bogolan. Upon his return to Benin, as he traced the market’s supply chain, he realized that the fabric he had purchased was an industrial counterfeit. That was the turning point:

“I was taken in at the time, but I vowed to myself that from that day on, I would create my own fabric by working directly with our artisans. ”

Vognon then set out to produce a 100% Beninese textile, handwoven from local cotton by a master weaver with whom Eustache develops exclusive, understated patterns of rare sophistication.

Integrating Unique Expertise

What fundamentally sets Vognon apart from the competition is its incorporation of highly sacred embroidery techniques. Upon observing the costumes of the Egungun (the spirits of the Voodoo tradition), Eustache and his partner were fascinated by the meticulous sequin embroidery (shimmering sequins) that adorns the ceremonial vests.

The challenge is immense. These costumes are secret and sacred, and their makers work exclusively within the convents, hidden from the eyes of the uninitiated. Thanks to his status as an insider and his respectful approach, Eustache manages to convince these artisans to collaborate commercially with the brand.

This unique and ethical collaboration incorporates vibrant sequin panels into contemporary luxury streetwear silhouettes (cargo pants, work jackets), creating a direct bridge between the art of spiritual mystery and the global fashion scene.

Sèmè City and the IFM

In December 2023, Eustache came across the call for applications for the FLY (Fashion Led by Youth) program, organized by the Sèmè City development agency in partnership with the prestigious Institut Français de la Mode (IFM) in Paris.

He applied “on a whim” during a difficult personal period marked by his father’s illness and subsequent death, and was selected to join the first cohort of incubatees.

This 12-month intensive program turned out to be the missing link for the brand. Through seminars in Cotonou, one-on-one mentoring with professors from Paris, and learning about cost structures, Eustache acquired the essential tools to articulate his approach and structure his business model.

Today, the brand’s distribution is expanding rapidly. In addition to its online store, Vognon is available at the exclusive concept store at the Sofitel Cotonou Marina. The brand is also preparing to open its private showroom in Cotonou, designed as an intimate experiential space, before expanding to Abidjan and Dakar very soon.

A first pop-up in Paris

The highlight of the 2026 season is undoubtedly the brand’s first Paris pop-up, held on June 27 and 28 during Men’s Fashion Week.

The event came to fruition thanks to a pivotal meeting that took place during the IFM study tour in Paris in 2025. There, Eustache met Youssouf Fofana, the founder of Maison Château Rouge. Impressed by the brand’s DNA, Youssouf immediately offered to host the pop-up and design an exclusive collaboration at the Union de la Jeunesse (formerly Tati Barbès).

For this special event, Eustache Ahomagnon isn’t just exporting his clothing— he’s bringing his master weaver from Benin directly to Paris.

The artisan will set up an authentic traditional loom (redesigned for the occasion) in the heart of the pop-up for live weaving demonstrations. On the second day, a hands-on workshop will even give the Parisian public a chance to explore the intricacies of this Beninese craft.

From Missébo to the cobblestone streets of Paris, Eustache Ahomagnon proves that African fashion should no longer be merely consumed: it should be experienced as a complete cultural journey—one that is autonomous and respectful of its original mysteries.

Africa Now 2026: How Does the Galeries Lafayette Pop-Up Showcase the Maturity of African Fashion?

“Black Skins,” a documentary series you won’t want to miss

PANAFRICA Opens Its First Factory in Côte d’Ivoire

From the courtyard in Abomey to the former Tati Barbès, Eustache Ahomagnon is shaking up Fashion Week.
