Stylist, fashion designer and consultant
Maximilien Kolbe Hategekimana is a name that is increasingly resonating in the world of Rwandan fashion. With a passion for design and a keen sense of business, Maximilien has dedicated his career to taking Rwandan fashion to new heights.
Fashion designer and creator
Born into a family deeply rooted in the world of fashion, Maximilien developed his passion for design at an early age. He first cut his teeth as a stylist for celebrities, politicians and businessmen. Later, he launched his own brand of made-to-measure clothing. Despite the challenges inherent in setting up a business in a still-emerging sector, Maximilien persevered, guided by a bold vision.
A turning point: Rwanda’s second-hand clothing ban
In 2016, Rwanda implemented a ban on the import of second-hand clothing. A decision that marked a turning point for the local fashion industry. This measure, although controversial, offered Maximilien the opportunity to promote the “Made in Rwanda” label. He worked closely with the government to encourage local production. Taxes on second-hand clothing imports were introduced. And designers were encouraged to adopt sustainable practices.
Made-to-measure and ready-to-wear
Aware of the need to make fashion accessible to all, Maximilien broadened his vision to create a mainstream brand. Inspired by fashion giants such as Ralph Lauren and Zara, he sought to develop a business model capable of appealing to a wide audience. To achieve this, he took several training courses to master the nuts and bolts of fashion marketing, logistics and sustainable development.
Kuza, Kigali’s incubator
In recent years, Maximilien has joined the team at Kuza, an incubator dedicated to supporting creative entrepreneurs in Kigali. The incubator’s ambition is to identify young talent in Rwandan fashion. Kuza offers an acceleration program designed to support emerging designers through mentoring.
Kuza’s main challenges and solutions
Maximilien and the Kuza teams have identified three major challenges facing Rwandan designers: education, infrastructure and financing. To address these, Kuza offers a range of services:
- Training and education
- Infrastructure and resources
- Financing and business development
Workshops, masterclasses and mentoring programs are organized to equip designers with the skills they need. Kuza provides production workshops, design software and other essential tools. The program helps designers draw up solid business plans, raise funds and develop their network.
By creating an ecosystem conducive to creativity and innovation, Kuza is enabling a new generation of Rwandan designers to make their mark on the international scene.
