An exhibition event in partnership with the Musée de l’Homme
African fashion is booming, and Wax is one of its most powerful symbols. This colorful fabric, with its varied, meaningful patterns, has become a veritable cultural emblem, carried far beyond the continent’s borders. Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann, in collaboration with the Musée de l’Homme, has decided to showcase this exceptional textile through an original exhibition.
Wax: a fabric steeped in history and symbolism
Wax, much more than a simple fabric, is a veritable vector of culture and identity. Its origins go back a long way, to the Indonesian batik, before being industrialized by Europeans and adopted by West Africa. Today, it has become a symbol of cultural diversity and belonging, worn with pride by Africans and Afro-descendants the world over.
The Wax Exhibition at Galeries Lafayette: A Journey in Three Themes
The “Wax” exhibition offers a rich and varied journey, exploring the many facets of this emblematic fabric. The public is invited to discover the history of Wax, from its origins to its golden age, via its role in the construction of plural identities and its place in African heritage.
Exceptional pieces and contemporary creations
The exhibition features a selection of exceptional pieces, from Indonesian batik seals to contemporary creations by African designers. On display are photographs by Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé, which bear witness to the rise of Wax in Africa in the 1950s-1960s, and creations by Adina Ntankeu, who fuses traditional ndop motifs with Wax printing techniques.
Promoting African culture
By hosting this exhibition, Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann is reaffirming its commitment to promoting African culture. “This project is fully in line with our commitment to promoting universal fashion, capable of reflecting the world’s diversity while federating talents and inspirations,” stresses Vincent Sénécat, Director of Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann.
The “Wax” exhibition at Galeries Lafayette is a not-to-be-missed event for all fashion and African culture enthusiasts. It offers a unique look at this emblematic fabric, revealing its history, cultural richness and creativity. An initiative that testifies to the commitment of Galeries Lafayette Paris Haussmann and the Musée de l’Homme to the promotion of African cultural and creative industries.
