A space steeped in history at the service of African creativity
The Maison communale de Plainpalais is a historic old building of stone and red brick, recently renovated with a glass elevator that opens onto a huge courtyard. Every room in the building has been designed to offer visitors an immersive experience during the Afrodyssée.
In the courtyard, it’s the maki or village of flavors. Each stand represents a region of Africa for a nomadic taste experience. Near the courtyard, a club atmosphere with a DJ set and a cocktail bar. Throughout the day and into the evening, the festive atmosphere brings together dance enthusiasts.
Inside the house, two rooms are reserved for exhibitions of designers’ collections. Each space allows you to discover distinct creative universes. You can wander around at your leisure, stopping to take in the sights and sounds of your heart’s desire.
For the show, the catwalk is set up under a magnificent 19th-century arch, the most impressive room in the house. A dozen designers took to the catwalk from 9pm. On Saturday evening, just before the presentation of the collections, the Mayor of Geneva spoke in support of the initiative. The search for sponsors and investors to promote this type of event is a real long-distance race. The protocol of thanks is skilfully executed by the masters of ceremony.
An ambitious concept to promote African fashion
The challenge of such a show is to propose a harmonious aesthetic whole with very distinct creative universes. The challenge is met, because the designers are so talented. Their attention to detail guarantees a show of the highest quality. We are surprised, amazed and astonished. We applaud. The show is worthy of this several-metre-high arch. Masa Mara – Rwanda’s poetic performance is a unique departure from the usual catwalk codes.
Collection showcase events and multi-designer fashion shows offer many advantages, both for fashion designers and for visitors. Participating in a multi-designer event allows everyone to benefit from the combined audience. Multi-designer events such as Afrodyssée generally attract more media attention. Journalists and bloggers covering the event are likely to talk about several designers, offering valuable free publicity.
Great business opportunities
Events offer designers the opportunity to meet other industry professionals, including buyers, distributors and investors. These contacts can lead to collaborations, partnerships and business opportunities. What’s more, designers can exchange ideas and inspiration with their peers, which can stimulate their creativity and open up new design perspectives.
