Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding promotes Indian fashion

This celebration of two wealthy Indian families is particularly popular on social networks. Indeed, guests include an eclectic gathering of celebrities Kim and Khloé Kardashian, Priyanka Chopra en Nick Jonas, John Cena. Like Rihanna a few weeks ago, Justin Bieber has reportedly been approached and paid to perform a private concert. The event is a way of promoting Indian fashion.

While some deplore the superficiality of such a display of wealth. On the face of it, the celebrities invited are not close to the young lovers. The media’s coverage of the event, which puts the spotlight on Indian fashion and culture, is to be welcomed.

And all the guests respected the dress code. The Kardashian sisters are dressed by Manish Majhotra, an Indian designer specializing in outfits dedicated to celebrations. In fact, Vogue has planned a feature to share some scenes from the preparation of the wedding of the year, and to present in detail the various outfits worn by the prestigious couple.

The epicenter of the fashion world seems to have shifted for the duration of this event.

This is far from quiet luxury. In fact, the accumulation of gilding and embroidery is the predominant feature of both men’s and women’s outfits. Men wear long, buttoned tunics, while women are draped in saris. Couples wear coordinated outfits. Celebration videos relayed on social networks are worthy of a Bollywood movie finale. And it’s an opportunity for the world to discover another vision of fashion, another representation of luxury. Bling Bling!

This event showcases the expertise of Indian fashion houses. Handmade creations using the most luxurious materials and the most talented little hands are in the spotlight.

Is fashion international?

This one-off event is a reminder of the vocation of the Africa Fashion Tour media in a fashion world dominated by a strong Western influence. The media’s ambition is to help you discover another vision of fashion, other codes, other know-how. A detour via India seemed essential this week to arouse your curiosity and spark discussion.

Why are fashion weeks from Asia, Latin America or Africa so under-represented in the Western fashion press? Whenever the opportunity arises, we’ll stop off in an under-represented region of the world to discover some aspect of diversity.
