Art as narrative

For its fifth year, the Paris Dauphine Afrique (PDA ) association is thinking big. The event, which now spans an entire week, adopts a strong, inspiring theme: “When art tells the continent’s story”.

Far from being a simple aesthetic exhibition, this week is intended as a space for transmission and affirmation. Whether in painting, music or cinema, art is presented here as a tool of memory, capable of telling plural stories and consolidating identities often fragmented by geographical distance.

An immersive program in the heart of Dauphine

The PSL (Paris Sciences & Lettres) ecosystem and the Centre Mazet will host a series of events designed to encourage sharing and conviviality:

  • Vernissage and Exhibition: Official launch on March 21 at 6pm at the Centre Mazet, for an immediate immersion in the creative universe of this edition.
  • Cinema and Debates: A screening scheduled for March 24 to explore the social and human realities of the continent through the big screen.
  • Workshops and Culture: totebag painting, canvas painting and a henna workshop to give you a hands-on experience of the creative material.
  • Artistic services: the dynamic presence of the @urbaineparis association to celebrate movement and dance.
  • Gastronomy: A grand African buffet to close the week under the banner of fraternity.

Carrying textile heritage into the diaspora era

The intellectual highlight of the week will take place on Thursday March 26 at 7:30pm in Amphitheatre 6. Fashion, the pivotal sector of contemporary African identity, will be the focus of a round-table discussion entitled: “Wearing the heritage: African fashion in the diaspora era”.

Long reserved for traditional ceremonies or the intimacy of the home, African fashion is now undergoing a spectacular transformation. It is now part of urban and global codes.

Topics covered:

  • Reappropriation: How do you transform fabrics and silhouettes with a strong tradition into everyday pieces?
  • Identity: What does the choice of “African” clothing reveal about the links between diaspora and creation?
  • Transmission: The role of creators in international cultural redefinition.

To shed light on these issues, the round table will welcome Ramata Diallo, founder of the Africa Fashion Tour media, for a lively discussion punctuated by textile discoveries.
