Michael Gah is a contemporary artist and activist from Ghana. From an early age, he showed a talent for drawing. As he grew older, he explored various artistic techniques. Eventually, he developed a unique method using textiles to create his works. This innovative process was born of his creativity and passion for art.
First steps as a contemporary artist
This precocious artist completed his studies in visual arts in 2016. Two years later, in 2018, he took part in his first exhibition. It was a group show, where two artists were paired each month at an art gallery in Ghana. This enriching experience enabled him to learn the ins and outs of exhibitions. It launched his career in the art world.
During this first exhibition, Michael Gah perfected his current technique. He uses textile waste to create his works. Initially, he was content to paint. But one day, he wanted to come up with something extraordinary. He returned to his childhood neighborhood. Memories of his time spent with his seamstress aunt came flooding back. He discovered African prints that he loved and realized he could incorporate them into his paintings. This innovative idea won over the public. His first solo exhibition in South Africa was a resounding success. It was the first time the public had seen this technique, and the exhibition was sold out.
Full-time contemporary artist
This young artist draws his inspiration from listening to podcasts, reading and researching other artists and techniques. He spends time with creative people to develop his skills. He works closely with his agent Marques Hardin. They meet regularly in Paris. Their collaboration began two years ago. Marques, with his experience in the art industry, advises Michael on managing his career as an artist. In addition, Instagram plays a crucial role in Michael’s career. He publishes his work on this platform, attracting a global audience. Thanks to Instagram, he achieves numerous sales and receives specific commissions for interesting projects.
A vocation as artist and activist
Since 2021, Michael Gah has been collaborating with a gallery in South Africa. This opportunity has propelled his art onto the international stage. He has had two solo exhibitions with them, notably at the Cape Town Art Fair. Michael is also deeply committed to raising awareness of textile pollution. As a child, he used to look at second-hand clothes imported from Europe at the Kantamantou market. He was shocked to learn that Europe was sending 1.2 million used clothes to Africa every month. He decided to use these second-hand clothes in his creations to raise awareness of textile waste. His aim is to challenge the textile industry and promote a more ecological way of life. For him, every work of art must solve a problem.
Michael Gah is a contemporary artist and activist whose unique and committed work resonates internationally. Thanks to his innovative technique and ecological commitment, he inspires and raises awareness. His works, blending art and textiles, connect people and challenge norms. Michael GA continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art while promoting environmental awareness.
