Multidisciplinary artist Roxane Mbanga inaugurates MansA - Maison des Mondes Africains in Paris with her exhibition NOIRES. This total work, conceived as a "Grand Salon" of hospitality, is the starting point of a new cultural platform dedicated to the exploration of African worlds and their diasporas.

The NOIRES project

For the inauguration of MansA, Roxane Mbanga confided the essence of her itinerant project NOIRES, nourished by her Guadeloupean, Cameroonian and Ivorian heritage, as well as the stories collected during her travels.

The artist deploys the Grand Salon as the centerpiece of this “dream house”. Far from being a simple retrospective, it is a living space that invites listening and contemplation, inhabited by voices, presences, silences and memories. Through this installation, conceived in situ in a new version, Roxane Mbanga uses a variety of media:

  • Original creations (illustrations, paintings, sculptures);
  • Textiles and furniture;
  • Affective objects that form an inseparable whole.

At the heart of the installation are door sculptures inspired by traditional African and West Indian architecture. These doors symbolize the passages that open up between multiple heritages and complex identities. The generous work delivers a clear message: the affirmation of identity completeness, a place where “there is nothing to give up, that we are whole and in our place.”

MansA, the home for African worlds

The opening of MansA – Maison des Mondes Africains with the NOIRES exhibition is no accident, but a strong affirmation of the ambition of this new venue. MansA is positioned as a lively and inclusive space, aiming to explore African cultures and their diasporas from the angle of diversity, creativity and imagination.

As the founders state, MansA opens “like crossing the threshold of a new home: with projections, renewed hopes, desires for storytelling and sharing.”

By entrusting this first stage to Roxane Mbanga, MansA is signalling its intention to become a place for storytelling, sharing and collective creation, where every visitor can feel at home, project his or her ideal and create a community.

The NOIRES exhibition by Roxane Mbanga is open to visitors from October 4 to 26. Admission is free, but reservations are required for individual 45-minute slots (up to 3 places per reservation).

Throughout the month of October, a rich cultural program will accompany the exhibition, with meetings, performances and workshops exploring themes dear to the artist’s heart.
