Ciné Club Afro joins forces with the MUBI platform to celebrate Senegal’s cinematic heritage. On Thursday March 5, Parisian audiences are invited to rediscover the restored version of Djibril Diop Mambéty’s cult film.
It’s a not-to-be-missed event for cinephiles. On Thursday March 5 at 7pm, the UGC Odéon-Danton cinema in Paris will host a one-off screening of Touki Bouki (1973). This special evening is organized by Ciné Club Afro, in partnership with streaming platform MUBI, underlining their shared commitment to the dissemination of visionary and diverse cinematic works.
A radical, restored work
Directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty, Touki Bouki is considered a major work of African cinema. Between urban wandering and poetic fulgurances, the film follows Mory, a young shepherd, and Anta, a rebellious student, bound by the same dream: to leave Dakar for Paris. Through their journey, the filmmaker deconstructs the fantasy of exile and, with striking modernity, questions the often illusory promises of the West.
This screening is all the more eagerly awaited as it presents the film in its 4K restoration, an essential preservation work carried out by the Film Foundation and the Cineteca di Bologna, in close collaboration with Teemour Diop Mambéty.
Beyond the screen: dialogue and transmission
True to its mission of creating spaces for reflection, Ciné Club Afro is not content with a simple screening. The screening will be followed by an exceptional meeting. Audiences will be able to exchange views with :
-
Teemour Diop Mambéty, son of the director
-
Kady Sy, content creator.
The discussion will be led by journalists Essimi Mévégué and Samba Doucouré, promising a rich debate on the film’s themes: the tensions between tradition and modernity, disillusionment with the European myth and the quest for freedom among post-colonial youth.
