In Tamale, Ghana, lies an ancestral secret handed down from generation to generation: shea butter, the true treasure of African women. Discover how this tradition blends with modern entrepreneurship with the Hamamat African Beauty brand, for a beauty adventure as captivating as it is rewarding.

The secret of the Hamamat African Beauty brand

Hamamat African Beauty is a beauty brand made in Africa. In Tamale, just under 500 km from Accra, Ghana’s capital, women farmers cultivate and protect shea butter, also known as “women’s gold”. They tirelessly repeat the same gestures to produce the butter with its 1001 virtues. They harvest the nuts from the tree. Then they immerse them in hot water baths. Finally, they dry them in the sun.

This first step is essential to recover the precious almonds that grow inside the nuts. The almonds are then crushed and roasted to form a thick, fatty paste: shea butter. Shea butter-based skincare rituals are widespread in Africa and elsewhere. The virtues of this natural butter are moisturizing, soothing and anti-aging. It is applied to newborns and children by mothers, aunts, big sisters and grandmothers immediately after bathing. Shea butter can be used on both skin and hair.

It’s a beauty companion full of memories, handed down from generation to generation.

The founder of the beauty brand

The Hamamat African Beauty brand offers a complete range of skincare products based on shea butter produced in the town of Tamale. Hamamat Montia, the founder, has skilfully used her fame as an international model and Miss Makalia Ghana 2006 to propel her brand. She regularly presents shea butter-based beauty routines to her 1.2M followers on Instagram.

Her brand is distributed on her website and in her boutique. She recently opened a spa to offer a unique skincare experience to lovers of shea and other natural products. This Beauty Success Story is above all a story of women and know-how. The entrepreneur drew on her grandmother’s expertise as a herbalist to create the moisturizing, natural formulas that have made her a success. And that’s how Hamamat African Beauté became a beauty brand made in Africa.

Today, it’s not uncommon to find an eclectic mix of luxury brands in the beauty essentials of the African middle class. On the one hand, a selection of local African brands offering natural, handmade skincare products, and on the other, imported cosmetics and perfume brands.
