An initiative to boost African fashion
The African fashion industry is booming, with immense potential to contribute to the continent’s economic and social development. However, many talented entrepreneurs face major obstacles, including lack of financing, skills and access to markets. In response to these challenges, the African Fashion Development Initiative (AFDI) was launched. This pioneering organization aims to transform the African fashion industry through strategic investment, in-depth research and capacity building.
A response to the needs of African entrepreneurs
AFDI was founded in response to a growing demand for support from African fashion entrepreneurs. Frederica Brooksworth, AFDI’s founder, also founded the Council for International African Fashion Education (CIAFE). Her experience working with designers, legal specialists, consultants and business leaders across the continent has been essential in identifying the most pressing needs.
“In my work with CIAFE, I witnessed the difficulties faced by talented fashion entrepreneurs. Lack of financing was a major obstacle. Without money, it’s difficult to start a business, expand, access quality materials or invest in sustainable production. AFDI was created to address this crucial need,” said Frederica Brooksworth.
AFDI initiatives
AFDI will focus on three key initiatives:
- Micro-grants: financial support for emerging entrepreneurs and small businesses. The aim is to foster their growth and stability, enabling them to invest in their activities, develop new products and create jobs.
- Capacity building: training programs in financial management, business management, operations, systems implementation and sustainable business practices. These training courses will enable entrepreneurs to acquire the skills they need to run their businesses effectively and grow over the long term.
- Industry research and data: gathering valuable market information to inform policy, investment decisions and global partnerships. This data will enable industry players to better understand market trends, consumer needs and growth opportunities.
A positive impact on the entire African fashion ecosystem
AFDI aims to have a positive impact on the entire African fashion ecosystem, supporting entrepreneurs, fostering innovation and encouraging more sustainable and ethical production. The organization will work closely with local players, international partners and government institutions to achieve its goals.
