The awakening of African artistic sovereignty
The date is set. Through its Ministry of Culture, Crafts and Tourism, the Senegalese government has announced that the 16th edition of the Biennale of Contemporary African Art will take place from November 19 to December 19, 2026. More than just an exhibition, the “Dakar Biennale” is the manifesto of a continent that is drawing its own aesthetic contours.
A global visibility platform
Since its creation, the Dakar Biennale has become the crossroads where the visions of the continent’s creators and their brothers in the diaspora meet. For the 2026 edition, the ambition is clear: to offer a showcase of excellence for contemporary African creativity.
In a globalized ecosystem where the spotlight is increasingly on Africa, this event serves as a filter and curator. It’s no longer a question of applying for a place in Western galleries, but of making Dakar the place where trends are set and talent is showcased.

2026, an exceptional year for the Senegalese capital
This 16th edition is part of a unique regional dynamic. Indeed, the year 2026 will also be marked by the hosting of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG). This synergy between high-level sport and contemporary art puts Dakar in the international spotlight.
This “exceptional dynamic” is transforming the capital into a global creative city, capable of attracting investors, collectors and lifestyle enthusiasts. For the luxury and fashion sectors, intimately linked with visual art, it’s an unprecedented opportunity to build bridges between clothing and artwork.

Art as a tool of cultural sovereignty
The official press release emphasizes a fundamental notion: cultural sovereignty. For Senegal, organizing this event is a powerful political act. It’s about strengthening artistic influence and ensuring that the narrative of African creation is carried by Africans themselves.
This vision is in line with the themes dear to Africa Fashion Tour: the independence of tone, the valorization of local know-how and the transition towards a structured and profitable creative economy.
An appointment not to be missed
The Senegalese authorities have taken all the necessary steps to ensure the success of this year’s event. For a month, Dakar will vibrate to the rhythm of openings, conferences and professional meetings. For players in the cultural and creative industries, Biennale 2026 will be a barometer of the continent’s vitality.
