The Adidas x Iamisigo collaboration is available on Zalando

by | 17 August 2026 | Mode

Building on the 2025 Zalando Visionary Award and Bubu Ogisi’s selection as a semifinalist for the 2026 LVMH Prize, this collaboration goes beyond a mere limited-edition capsule collection to become an aesthetic, political, and eco-conscious manifesto.

The Zalando Visionary Award as an Institutional Catalyst

The origins of this partnership lie in an industrial incubation and institutional support program orchestrated by Zalando. By presenting Bubu Ogisi with its 2025 Zalando Visionary Award, the European retail giant offered the brand—which operates in Lagos, Nairobi, and Accra—a premier showcase at Copenhagen Fashion Week.

This award, which recognizes a commitment to textile innovation, sustainability, and social justice, has enabled Iamisigo to become part of the official Danish calendar while forging a direct connection with the platform’s industry partners.

In line with this, Zalando facilitated a partnership between Iamisigo and Adidas Originals. The strategic goal was to bring together cutting-edge Pan-African design with the market clout and infrastructure of a global leader in sportswear.

  • For Zalando: The initiative reinforces its role as a cultural trailblazer capable of promoting inclusive and socially conscious fashion.
  • For Adidas Originals: The collaboration infuses its urban silhouettes with authentic narrative depth and artisanal craftsmanship, drawing on the expertise of a designer trained at ESMOD Paris who has honed her skills in Lagos, London, and the French capital.

A performance fashion show called “The Deconstruction Table”

Iamisigo Fashion Week Runway Show in Copenhagen

The conceptual highlight of this project was unveiled during the presentation of Iamisigo’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, titled “Sacred Ecologies,” in Copenhagen. At the heart of the staging was a performative installation called “The Deconstruction Table.”

During this live performance, Bubu Ogisi and his collective of artisans set out to take apart, cut up, and restructure archival pieces as well as mass-produced clothing from Adidas’s inventory, all before the audience’s eyes.

The industrial sports equipment was taken apart and then reassembled by hand using natural fibers and materials from the African continent:

  • Banana fibers harvested in Uganda.
  • Sisal grown in Tanzania.
  • Locally produced cotton fabrics and wooden beads crafted in Nigeria.
  • Recycled aluminum from Kenya and reclaimed glass.
  • Organic plant-based dyes applied without any synthetic chemicals.

By focusing on crochet, knotting, and hand weaving, Iamisigo has transformed mass-produced items into one-of-a-kind textile works. This approach embodies the brand’s philosophy, which views clothing aswearable art” and the body as a vessel for memory and spirituality.

By subjecting Adidas’s visual heritage to this ritual of deconstruction, Bubu Ogisi engages in a decolonial reappropriation. She reintroduces the long term, ritual gesture, and sacredness into the heart of hyper-industrialization.

From the Conceptual to the Mainstream

Behind the Scenes at the Iamisigo Fashion Week Copenhagen Runway Show

To translate this cutting-edge research into a product accessible to a global community, Adidas Originals and Iamisigo have designed a commercial piece available exclusively on the Zalando platform.

The centerpiece of this consumer-focused collection is built around the following features:

  • Product:Adidas Originals x Iamisigo Graphic Oversized Tee (by Bubu Ogisi).
  • Cut and Pattern: Loose/oversized fit, straight lines, round neckline, unisex pattern suitable for all body types.
  • Color palette: Available in Black (matte black) and Warm Vanilla (ecru/vanilla), two mineral-inspired shades that evoke the earth and raw fibers.
  • Visual language: A visual fusion between the iconic Adidas Originals trefoil and the sacred geometric patterns created by Bubu Ogisi, inspired by continental mythologies.
  • Positioning and Distribution: Available at the affordable price of €34.95 and sold exclusively on the Zalando website.

The choice of these neutral shades reflects a desire to offer timeless basics, free from the fleeting trends of fast fashion. This T-shirt thus helps make a complex cultural narrative accessible to a wider audience by incorporating it into the everyday European streetwear wardrobe.

Reversing the Global Balance of Power

This collaboration provides a rich framework for analyzing trends in the fashion industry through three key insights:

  1. The Democratization of Pan-African Conceptual Art: Bubu Ogisi’s journey demonstrates that an uncompromising creative approach—usually reserved for art galleries and haute couture fashion shows—can reach the mass market through e-commerce without losing its soul or its high standards.
  2. Political upcycling versus greenwashing: By demonstrating that sustainability lies not only in industrial labels but also in the revaluation of artisanal labor and the deconstruction of surplus goods, IAMISIGO offers a radical alternative to overproduction.
  3. The Reversal of Creative Governance: Historically, major Western brands have tended to draw inspiration or motifs from African cultures without involving African creators in decision-making. By entrusting the deconstruction of its own archives to a Nigerian designer, adidas has agreed to place its identity under the artistic direction and critical eye of a designer from the Global South.

The collaboration between Adidas Originals, Iamisigo, and Zalando marks a turning point in the recognition of contemporary African design. By connecting the textile engineering of workshops in Lagos, Nairobi, and Accra to the runways of Copenhagen and European distribution networks, this project demonstrates that cultural sovereignty and artisanal precision are the most powerful drivers of global textile innovation.
